University of North Tees Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in the North East and has undergone a multi-million-pound refurbishment programme. As part of this programme, carried out by N G Bailey Limited, a requirement for a large amount of renewable energy was planned for two areas of the hospital; one on an existing roof and one on a new build energy centre. The key issue of Health & Safety planning was a major determining factor as the installation had to be carried out without impact on either ambulance services, patient safety or critical services delivery in a busy NHS environment. In addition, as two different roof types – tiles and standing seam – were specified, different mounting systems for each area were required.
Square 4 Services (SQ4S) were selected for their experience and expertise of large-scale solar PV design, installation services and their ability to demonstrate a credible, deliverable planning programme to complete the installations in safest manner to the complete satisfaction of the NHS Trust. In addition, SQ4S pointed out to the NHS Trust the benefits of integrating the PV system into the Fire Safety systems across the hospital, to ensure that the PV-generation was switched off in the case of an emergency.
SQ4S completed the installation of 250kWp of solar PV in late 2017 to programme despite severe weather throughout the six week installation period. Luke Stonehouse, site manager, called Square 4 Services to say ‘ it was a pleasure working with the installation team and their efficiency and work ethic were to be admired’.
